WHY MICROBIOLOGY?

What can microbiology do for your crop?

The root zone is an active biological system. The right microorganisms support processes around root development, nutrient availability and uptake, plant vitality and resilience.

In professional growing, the root zone is more than water, substrate and nutrients. It is an active biological system in which plant, microorganisms and nutrients constantly interact.

The right microorganisms support processes that matter for root development, nutrient availability and uptake, plant vitality and the resilience of the crop.

MICROBIOLOGY AT WORK

From microbial activity to a vital crop

  • NUTRIENT AVAILABILITY

    Helping make nutrients available

Certain microorganisms support processes that make nutrients in the root zone more available.

  • NUTRIENT UPTAKE

    Supporting efficient uptake

An active rhizosphere strengthens the interaction between root, microorganisms and nutrition.

  • ROOT DEVELOPMENT

A strong foundation around the root

Microbial activity supports an environment in which roots develop well.

  • RHIZOSPHERE

    An active biological root environment

Targeted microorganisms stimulate beneficial activity in the zone directly around the root.

  • PLANT VITALITY

    Supporting a vital crop

A well-functioning root zone is the basis for a crop that performs well through the season.

  • RESILIENCE

A sound basis for a resilient crop

A vital crop copes better with changing growing conditions. Not a treatment against diseases or pests.

  • NITROGEN FIXATION

    Specific microbiology, specific functions

Certain microorganisms, such as Azotobacter vinelandii, can fix atmospheric nitrogen. Not every microorganism has this function.

MICROBIOLOGY AS A SYSTEM

Microorganisms do not work in isolation

The root zone is a biological system. Different microorganisms have their own functions, sometimes contribute to the same processes and together influence the plant.

  1. Functional diversity

    Different organisms perform different functions.

  2. Functional overlap

Organisms can partly contribute to the same process without being interchangeable.

  3. Functional complementarity

Functions can complement each other within one system.

Composition matters. Interactions are not positive by definition; they can also be neutral or competitive. More on Bacillus in the root zone →

COMPOSITION

Targeted or multi-species

More species is not automatically better: the desired function and application determine which composition is relevant. ROOT-N adds a complementary function: biological nitrogen fixation. View ROOT-N →

FROM GROWING GOAL TO SOLUTION

How we arrive at the right microbiology

  1. 01Growing goal & situation
  2. 02Biological processes
  3. 03Microbial functions
  4. 04Organisms & composition
  5. 05Suitable solutions

A growing goal often involves several processes, and functions and organisms do not map one to one. That is why we look at the whole.

PART OF THE WHOLE

Microbiology does not work in isolation from the crop

Young crops in substrate bags with drip irrigation and a soil sensor in a professional greenhouse

Microorganisms strengthen what happens in the root zone, but they do not replace sound nutrition, water and climate management. Results also depend on:

  • Root environment
  • Temperature
  • Water quality
  • pH
  • EC
  • Oxygen
  • Nutrition
  • Substrate
  • Irrigation strategy
  • Growing conditions

That is why we match every application to the crop and growing system. More on microbiology in hydroponics.

A SPECIFIC MICROBIOLOGICAL QUESTION?

Looking for a specific microbial function?

Not every microbiological question fits the standard range. Our specialists investigate what is possible.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions about microbiology in growing

Is a product with several bacterial species always better?

No. A multi-species formulation brings several organisms, and with them a broader microbial composition, together. A targeted formulation is relevant when a specific organism and its properties are central. More species is not automatically better: the desired function and application determine which composition is relevant.

Can I use different microbial products side by side?

That can be relevant when functions complement each other, for example a specific function such as nitrogen fixation alongside a broader microbial base. Whether a combination makes sense depends on the composition, the crop, the growing system and the application. Discuss this with our specialists before combining products.

Which BIOMICROBES product fits my application?

That depends on the functions you want to support and on your growing system. For soil and substrate there are BIOMICROBES 02 (targeted), BIOMICROBES 08 (multi-species) and ROOT-N (complementary function), for hydroponics HYDROPONICS, and for stored water and irrigation WATER TREATMENT and DRIP LINE. Sometimes one product fits, sometimes several side by side. Our specialists are happy to think along with you.

Does microbiology also work in hydroponics?

Yes, but conditions are different. In hydroponics the nutrient solution is the root zone: there is no soil to buffer, microorganisms move with the water, and UV or disinfection can affect their presence. HYDROPONICS is therefore developed specifically for water-based and recirculating systems.

What if I am looking for a specific microorganism?

If your question falls outside the standard range, our specialists can investigate specific requests thanks to in-house development and production. What is possible depends on the organism, the application and technical feasibility.
